Since the 19th century, people have started exchanging postcards and gifts such as roses and chocolates. The gift of roses is common among couples, and the color of roses determines the message expressed. For example, the red rose symbolizes love, white represents peace and yellow represents friendship.

Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as Valentine’s Day around 498 AD. There are several theories about the birth of Valentine’s Day, and one of them frames a story that blends drama with romanticism, while others argue that it is a Christianized festival of the pagan world.

The Catholic Church recognizes eleven Saints Valentín and on February 14th were celebrated at least three:

1) Valentin of Rome: a Roman priest who suffered martyrdom around the year 269 and was buried in the Via Flaminia. Their relics are in the Church of Santa Práxedes in Rome and in the Carmelite Church of Whitefriar Street in Dublin (Ireland).

2) Valentin of Terni: around year 197 was named bishop of Interamna (the current Terni). It is also buried in the Via Flaminia, but in another place than Saint Valentine of Rome. His relics are in the Basilica of St. Valentine in Terni.

3) A third saint named Valentín(according to the Catholic Encyclopedia) was mentioned in primitive martyrologies under the same date (February 14). It is only said that he was martyred in Africa with several companions.

In the United Kingdom during the seventeenth century, the celebration of Valentine’s Day spread. In the 18th century it was common for friends and lovers to exchange handwritten love notes. At the end of this century, printed cards began to replace these letters. At this time Americans also adopted the tradition, and in the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first series-made cards.

As good friends as we are, we will not wait for you with made cards, but with hugs and the best home to celebrate love.
